ABSTRACT

Higher education in particular and education in general has important responsibility of providing the critical reflection of every aspect of the society in which we live. Education is supposed to provide freedom from tyranny of ignorance and reduce the chances of being trapped in prison of poverty and squalor. Higher education is also supposed to develop the critical acumen towards the way in which the society is economically and politically structured and which is reproduced every day. The success of education can be judged not solely on the basis of mere statistics of literacy, enrolment and employment alone but also by the level of critical reflective spirit that it can develop, which is guided by strong sense of justice, equality and freedom. Without this spirit, there is always a danger of the society stagnating within the unequal, oppressive and unjust socio-political structures, which might even become tyrannical.
