ABSTRACT

This chapter explores how new labor arrangements are being put in place across the region. In its hinterland regions, the province had poorly developed community and industrial infrastructure and, as a result, was not experiencing either economic or population growth. More than 40 years later, these interior and northern hinterland regions are undergoing a second round of transformation. Young workers flocked to the region and its many opportunities to build a livelihood and career. One such regional organization was the Council of Northern Interior Forest Employment Relations. The biggest one for the industry is the fact that there is so much development going on in the Peace Region. The forest base in the Mackenzie timber supply area (TSA) is composed of spruce, Lodgepole pine, and balsam fir. As with other forest regions in BC, there is a considerable volume and range of deciduous trees within the supply area as well.
