ABSTRACT

The concept of ‘creative industries’ had not received the specific attention of Indonesian policy makers who were in charge of developing the industrial sector in macroeconomic policy. This chapter argues that one of the main avenues for the formation of creative businesses is the Do-It-Yourself (DIY) approach. DIY is a manner directly related to the mode of mass production and generally taken as a reaction to it. The rise of the DIY movement in the city’s fashion industry has also coincided with an increase in the number of independent music labels that lead with new musical works from various music genres. Many creative workers in the music and fashion sectors distribute their products through informal channels. DIY music grew at the same time with the development of digital music production and online music platforms. Most of the musicians in Bandung could record or produce their own music.
