ABSTRACT

A major part of the creative industries literature is on the discourse of how these industries contribute to the economy, positively affecting business climate, enhancing the urban image and identity of a city/nation, and increasing the spirit of innovation and creativity. This chapter explores how creative workers can spur alternative movements and mobilize resistance to social problems by utilizing their particular skills and tools. It focuses on cases from two prominent regions in Indonesia. The first is from Bandung where a creative movement has a formal presence in the city’s government as one of the local creative entrepreneurs and community leaders was successfully elected as Mayor through a campaign supported by creative workers. The second is an ongoing case that is happening in Bali, where creative activism has become an important tool in raising an important environmental issue. To trace the emergence of the cultural resistance, it is important to look back at the cultural imaginations of Bali.
