ABSTRACT

A place is a piece of the whole environment which has been claimed by feelings. A place is a given space that can be directly experienced, intimately known and passionately loved by its inhabitants (Lewis 1979: 40–41). All places have a sense of shared experiences and often that experience is not shared by others who do not inhabit that particular place. Those qualities which invoke a sense of security, familiarity and of habit of belonging, are sense of place qualities (Wales 1979: 74). A sense of place implies that a community has an accurate reading of its past and present, and some idea regarding its future.
