ABSTRACT

There are a variety of state-level political factors that are expected to influence the number of women and minorities in state legislative office. However, the previous research either focuses on White women, Black women, or an aggregate look at racial/ethnic minority women. This analysis evaluates how Latinas experience the state level political factors compared to their other female and Latino male counterparts. I find that Latina legislators gain greater political representation in single-member districts, with no term limits, a state liberal political ideology, and areas with higher percentages of the Latino population.
