ABSTRACT
In this book, we have highlighted both the need for a common language, or lingua franca, for the specific purpose of air traffic controllerpilot communications, and the difficulties associated with achieving that goal. Our discussions have focused around not only the use of language itself in the aviation context, but on the broader context in which these communications take place, including policies and other contextual factors that relate to the effectiveness of communication in this high-stakes environment.
