ABSTRACT

Elective home education (EHE), or home schooling as it is better known in the US (and simply home education outside of the UK), was originally a significant yet tacit educational concept. Nowadays, the origins of the idea are linked to a minority choice which leads parents and children away from school attendance. In other words, millions of children around the world go to school at home based on their parent's decision, rather than state compulsion. Research on EHE is developing continually. It consistently (if not unilaterally) suggests that this option is viable and successful as a suitable, efficient education, although what suitable and efficient means depends on national interpretations and case law. National laws vary as to their demands on what kind of education is required in and through elective home education, but a child should be fitted by their home education to contribute as an adult successfully to a wider society.
