ABSTRACT

‘How do I perform for myself?’ This was a question I was constantly asking myself after an experience where I was rehearsing for a show, evoked by one of my university lecturers. Will I feel more empowered as a performer if I hold onto all my energy rather than radiate out towards the audience? I always assumed there was only one way to perform and if the intention was to perform, it was to be directed towards an audience. Struggling with this issue, I later realized there were many ways to perform. I began to question what are my aesthetic ideals and what do I feel confident with as a dancer and dance creator, developing from the question, ‘what do I believe in as a performer?’ This prompted my interest in clearly examining my dance experiences to discover and settle at an understanding of who I am as a dancer and dance creator at this point in time.
