ABSTRACT

This lengthy review of William James’ book on pragmatism was published in The Albany Review, n.s. 2 ( Jan. 1908): 393–410 (B&R C08.01). Its alliterative title, “Transatlantic ‘Truth’”, was given by Henry Buxton, the editor of the Review. Russell’s original title remains unknown. “My article on James had a plain title originally,” he wrote to Margaret Davies on 15 January, “but Buxton insisted on a fancy title.” When Russell reprinted Paper 16 in his book Philosophical Essays (1910, 127–49), he did so under the title “William James’s Conception of Truth”, which we adopt here.
