ABSTRACT

When Rusell Reviewed in Mind (1905a) Poincaré’s book Science and Hypothesis, the English translation of La science et l’hypothèse, Poincaré was not altogether pleased. What we know of the events surrounding his displeasure are found in a letter which Russell wrote to Couturat on 21 November 1905:

I do not know if you see Mind. It seems that Monsieur Poincaré was rather offended by a review of Science and Hypothesis which I wrote. He has written a response, which will appear in January; and I have replied to his response. He alludes to his forthcoming article on mathematical induction; it seems to me he is completely unaware of the meaning and import of this principle. (1994, 585, and 2001, 549)
