ABSTRACT

You begin reading this chapter. As you do so, you are in a specific spatial situation: maybe you just received this volume (by mail, at the bookstore, or in the library), and now you are just browsing the pages and reading selected articles which catch your attention. While you are doing so, there is a specific sonic environment around you that is present all the time as you are browsing. Maybe even your attention is zooming in and out, framed by the sounds around you — and suddenly, reading these words, you notice this one special and strangely annoying or surprisingly remote sound: a sound which you did not hear before — but now seems to be at the front of your auditory awareness.
