ABSTRACT

Sense-perceptions and the faculty of perception we ascribe to the senses are culturally and historically conditioned. How both are conceived forms a part of complex processes: this is the thrust of this essay. To provide examples, I will use just one particular object: an inscribed scroll depicting the esoteric body. It was produced in the 19th century in the milieu of the Dādūpanth, a widely spread and once influential sect within the Sant religion as it flourished in Rajasthan (Northwest India). 1
