ABSTRACT
“I am because you are.” An African defines himself or herself by the group—the word “tribe” is still inaccurately used—to which he/she belongs. “Communalism” or “collectivism” is a term which captures the essence of this traditional value. It served the Africans well in the past. Is it a curse in the twenty-first century?
