ABSTRACT

Kwame Nkrumah, first president of Ghana, is reported to have said: “First seek the political kingdom and the rest shall be added onto it.” One can imagine, following the transfer of power, African leaders, in near panic, going, “Now what?” The first 30 years of African independence are a study in confusion and bewilderment in the face of mountains of inherited problems: fragmentation of identities, sky-high mass expectations of instant wealth, health, and education.
