ABSTRACT
Whereas sociologists are likely to examine in great detail the older person’s roles, status, functional utility, and lifestyle in a particular culture at one point in time, anthropologists most often compare and contrast these variables and their interrelationships in a variety of cultures. Comparisons of the position and status of older persons in different cultures have yielded a number of patterns that vary with the type of culture and the perceived role of older persons in it.
