ABSTRACT

The previous selection introduced the concept of witnessing on the part of nurses, the biomedical healers most involved in attending to the patient’s life situation on an ongoing basis. The current selection focuses on physicians-in-training in a nontraditional learning environment where witnessing is an explicit ideology expressed in self-conscious opposition to the objectifying tendencies of biomedicine (see selection 7). As the previous selections have shown, these tendencies, symbolized in the concept of the powerful medical gaze, are a main focus of scholarly and popular criticisms of biomedicine.
