ABSTRACT
All academic fields have a history on which new concepts and knowledge are built. In this selection, Charles Leslie roots the discipline of medical anthropology in the intellectual currents and sociocultural contexts of anthropology as it evolved over the first half of the twentieth century. The essay emphasizes the continuing importance of evolutionary and cross-cultural perspectives in medical anthropology and provides a rich bibliography of important books and articles.
