ABSTRACT
The Spanish flu pandemic of 1918–1919 is one example of what can happen when disease pools converge (see selection 19). It serves as a warning that similar disease episodes are possible and even likely in an increasingly interconnected world. Because of its rapidity and violence, the Spanish flu pandemic also provides an historical model of social, medical, and governmental responses that can be utilized to develop recommendations in the event of an intentionally created epidemic.
