ABSTRACT

This is the first of a pair of selections presenting different theoretical approaches leading to different research questions and diverse ideas about the management of Type II diabetes. This first selection emphasizes the interaction between genetic susceptibility factors and lifestyle characteristics as the mechanism explaining the distribution of the disease. Diamond’s analysis illustrates Krieger’s point about the difference between gene frequency and gene expression (selection 40) and Goodman’s argument about distinguishing between groups of people sharing high frequencies of certain genes and groups of people classified according to cultural concepts of race (selection 15).
