ABSTRACT

Hemophilia is a disease with a straightforward genetic explanation, but each person’s experience is shaped by a unique interaction between human biology and sociocultural forces. The disease appears with different degrees of severity, and cultural interventions such as prophylactic treatment with clotting factors modulate the degree to which it restricts activities that otherwise would be too dangerous. This means that many people with hemophilia are able to pursue sports, with benefits to their psychosocial well-being.
