ABSTRACT

A request came to our university Communication Lab (a tutoring service staffed by students for the purpose of training peers to research and present speeches) to make a presentation to a group of people with disabilities on

communication, and we jumped at the opportunity. The organization making the request often gets requests from schools and civic organizations to have people with disabilities make presentations on how to live with disabilities and the people who have them. We were asked to assist these presenters in sharpening their communication skills. And, oh, did we prepare! We were the communication experts, after all, and we had much to teach these folks about communication. Armed with overhead transparencies, PowerPoint slides, handouts, and myriad How To tips, we headed for the facility. In the car, we talked about predicted outcomes, how we would get small group involvement, and in what order we would present.
