ABSTRACT

This chapter continues the discussion on the global golf industry, now focusing on the continent of Africa. While South Africa has historically dominated this context, a number of other nations are now considered emerging golf destinations, constructing world-class golf courses, luxurious resorts and hosting tour events. This chapter introduces the golf industry in Africa, looking at the historic development of the PGA, tours, events, players and courses. It also assesses the current state of the industry, reflecting on the findings of a recent golf industry summit as well as trade publications and marketing materials and websites relating to this industry. The chapter identifies the unique challenges and opportunities that face the African industry, emphasizing the socioeconomic impact of golf through sport development, tourism and the sustainability of course and resort development. Further considerations are proposed for the positive future development of the industry, such as access, community participation and the engagement of stakeholders.
