ABSTRACT

This study was carried out over one year. Schools across the two countries were

recruited to ensure a range of CLIL profiles in terms of experience, teacher

orientation (language/language and subject), languages used (French, German and Spanish) and ability of the classes (mixed ability groups, high-and low-ability sets)

within the 1214 age range. The regular language of instruction is English. The majority of learners had limited language learning experience prior to secondary

school at the age of 11. Eleven schools opted to participate divided between three

categories: two ‘experienced’ schools with over five years of CLIL practice; four

‘experimenting’ schools with less than two years of piloting CLIL; and five

‘introductory’ schools with no former experience of CLIL. The total number of

participants was distributed across 2 countries, 11 schools, 32 teachers and over 670 pupils. In nine schools CLIL was led by the language teachers and in five schools

language and subject teachers collaborated.
