ABSTRACT

Once in West Africa I took a photo of a woman who looked very, very tired and at least 8½ months pregnant. Holding a heavy watering can, she was tending tree seedlings. I put the photo on my desk to remind me of the many times I had heard, “Women must become more involved in projects.” But involved how and with what goal? This chapter relates to my work from the late 1960s to the late 1990s on improving the conditions of people in non-industrial countries. Projects were not always helpful to either disadvantaged men or women. They did not always reflect local cultural or physical realities.
