ABSTRACT

Concern over the contribution of forest clearing and degradation to climate change has led to the promotion of strategies for Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD+). REDD+ is intended to be a performance-based mechanism whereby forest stakeholders at multiple scales (from national to household levels) could be rewarded for protecting or enhancing the carbon sequestration capacity of forests (Angelsen 2009). Since the initial proposal by the coalition of rainforest countries, led by Papua New Guinea and Costa Rica, at the UNFCCC 11th Conference of Parties (COP) in 2005 in Montreal, REDD+ has been placed firmly on the global climate change agenda.
