ABSTRACT

In recent years, scent has become increasingly culturalized and part of contemporary art and design (A&D) practices. Yet higher education remains resistant to including it in curricula. Consequently, the risk is that current A&D education is no longer compatible with contemporary culture. This chapter argues for the inclusion of scent in A&D education to prepare artists and designers for a world increasingly engaged with smell. It examines the culturalization of scent, its prospects and challenges in A&D higher education. The chapter concludes with an outline for integrating scent into A&D curricula, and a summary of the benefits of that.
