ABSTRACT

For over eight years,I have exhibited scent-based installations in that most antiseptic of institutions, the art museum. While the creation of evocative smells might seem to be the primary goal of an olfactory artist, I highlights another challenge which is often overlooked for its technical and creative potential: namely, the hardware infrastructure that is used to emit the scent. Using three recent art projects as case studies, this chapter considers a variety of scent emission devices, and offers technical, poetic and conceptual justifications for my choice of each.
