ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses how the sense of smell fathoms space, and therefore how a visually trained artist like myself, with no initial background in chemistry or in the biophysical properties of our olfactory sense, had to reconsider his conception of space in order to successfully conceive installations and performances whose primary concern is smell. I use key examples from my work, as well as the existing research material on smell, to problematize the following topics: interactive diffusion systems I have designed (often collaboratively), and disseminated, networked, simultaneous andlocalizedolfactory spaces
