ABSTRACT

Urban landscaping can enhance people’s sensory perceptions and overall urban experiences. Recent studies have found that olfactory experiences can influence emotions and memories, and suggest the smellscape can play an important role in place-making. Some of the most favored smells in Western countries are those of ‘natural’ environments, including vegetation, water and fresh air, and the introduction of fragrant plants and water features into public areas can enhance urban experiences, through smell. This chapter reviews existing practices in this context in China, Europe and the United Kingdom, and discusses enhancing smellscape experiences, outlining opportunities and challenges.
