ABSTRACT

This chapter will examine group therapy techniques with children and adolescents with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). The intent of this chapter is to give the reader skills to effectively conduct group therapy with children and adolescents with ASD to address the challenges of working with youth with these diagnoses. Those familiar with ASD know that social skills deficits are common in individuals with ASD, and there is a great amount of research devoted to social skills training (see Hariton, Chapter 32 , this volume). Miller, Vernon, Wu, and Russo (2014) found 44 studies in peer reviewed journals related to social skills training alone. The thrust of this chapter is that the issues addressed will indirectly improve the social skills of the young person.
