ABSTRACT

The redevelopment process of Tiexi's traditional industrial zone led to many co-benefits, such as the reduction in carbon emissions and local air pollutants, as well as an improvement in land-use efficiency. Policy support, technology innovation and land redevelopment are the three main driving forces for bringing co-benefits from the Tiexi redevelopment. Technology innovation made a direct impact on the achievement of the environmental and climate goals in Tiexi, generating co-benefits. As the total amount of emissions in Tiexi continues to grow rapidly from electricity, heat production and industry, there are many opportunities to introduce new technologies on a large scale, such as geothermal energy. Land redevelopment was key for creating the co-benefits, particular with regards to climate change, environmental protection and public health. The model of brownfield redevelopment in Tiexi has become a show-case for redeveloping other industrial bases in China.
