ABSTRACT

In what follows, I pay close attention to the term excrementality in relation to transgression and transgressive agents in L’boulevard. Excrementality, in the context of the festival I discuss here, is an example of what Gayatri Spivak calls strategic essentialism (1988), an instance of tactic acknowledgement of tabouzbalit (the state of being a remainder) as an intrinsic trait, and employment of this essentialism as a strategy to put up resistance. Excrementality is a pragmatic complementary theory to the images that Kristeva (1982) strictly links with abjection (death, excrement, body fluids, for example). It is also linked with Spivak’s concept of essentialism, which I read here as the necessity to act in accordance with customary stereotypes and social representations in order to transgress them.
