ABSTRACT

The United States is the principal consumer of Canadian softwood lumber. In 1977 (the latest year for which official data are available) Canada produced 17.2 billion board-feet of softwood lumber, of which some 10.4 billion board-feet, or about 60 percent, was exported to the United States. Over the past decade, Canada has made steady inroads in U.S. markets. Canada’s share of total U.S. new supply (domestic production plus imports) rose from 16.5 percent in 1968 to 27.7 percent in 1978. Much of this expansion has taken place in the traditional markets of the north central and northeastern regions. But southern markets have also accounted for a substantial portion of the growth in imports.
