ABSTRACT

In May 2014 the third author of our chapter, Edgar Escutia Chagoya, stood up in his middle school media center and recounted the story of his journey from Mexico to the U.S. and his first months living in Athens, Georgia. A complete newcomer from Guanajuato when he joined our Rabbit Box Youth Voices (RBYV) project, 13-year-old Edgar thrived on preparing stories, photos, and poetry in Spanish and English for two public performances. Throughout this chapter, beginning with his comments, which follow, Edgar provides salient observations about what he and his fellow bilingual students need in school and why he became invested in the RBYV project. Ruth and Edgar met regularly when writing this chapter, and we have not edited his comments in any way in terms of content or grammar. Edgar also wanted to make sure that his comments were separate from our regular narrative so that readers could see read and interact with him directly. We indented and italicized Edgar’s comments.
