Malaysia is a federation with a bicameral legislature based on the Westminster parliamentary system of government. Between the period of its independence in 1957 to date, the Election Commission and the courts have dealt with over 100 election disputes. This chapter sets out the legal framework under which election disputes in Malaysia are determined and highlights the key areas in which contentious issues have arisen.
