ABSTRACT

In the penultimate episode of Twin Peaks: The Return, the 2017 Showtime continuation of David Lynch and Mark Frost’s seminal series that first aired on ABC in 1990 and 1991, FBI Special Agent Dale Cooper, played by Kyle MacLachlan, revisits the Washington state town of Twin Peaks where the original series was set. The final episode of The Return confirms for us that in the world of David Lynch, there are no tidy conclusions, no easy answers, and no unvarnished tranquility. The recurring presence of doppelgangers, and the transformation of characters into other characters in Lynch’s work, of course compels the questions of “what does it mean?” and “how do I make sense of this?” Most characteristic of Lynch however, and saturated with allusions to Lynch’s body of work, is the performance by Mexican American singer Rebekah Del Rio of the song “No Stars” – a song co-written by Lynch – at the end of episode 10 of The Return.
