ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses models of curriculum planning at Key Stage 1. It is supported by two case studies, a History Day with Year 1 and a History Week with Year 2, which are illustrated with examples of planning, children’s talk and writing. Analysis shows that they implement, but are not driven by learning objectives and emphasise personal understanding and developing points of view. The studies recognize the importance of engaging children’s interests, of play, hands-on experience, the use of language and developing investigations that take into account the learning dispositions of the children.
