ABSTRACT
Few areas of British history are subject to greater controversy over historical interpreta - tions than the 2013 English National Curriculum for History’s (DfE 2013) statutory, i.e. compulsory, study of:
n The Viking and Anglo-Saxon struggle for the Kingdom of England to the time of Edward the Confessor with its examples (non-statutory, voluntary) that could include: – Viking raids and invasion; – resistance by Alfred the Great and Athelstan, first king of England; – further Viking invasions and Danegeld; – Anglo-Saxon laws and justice; – Edward the Confessor and his death in 1066.
