ABSTRACT

This chapter is about the construction of expertise within certifi cation auditing, that is, the expertise required to perform certifi cation auditing based on standards such as ISO 9001 on quality assurance, ISO 14001 on environmental management, the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) standards on sustainable forestry, and the like. Compared to the previous chapter on management consultants in which the author constructed their expertise in an informal way, there is an elaborate set of formalized rules that structure this fi eld. In the chapter, I will discuss the character of these formalization efforts and structures that have evolved around this type of expertise, how they are justifi ed, who is involved in organizing them, and some of the consequences of this way of organizing certifi cation auditing expertise.
