In group analysis Foulkes gave only qualified value to the use of interpretation, insisting that analysis a broader concept composed of location and translation should take precedence. Foulkes and Anthony provide a comprehensive account of translation. They seek the discovery of unknown and unadmitted motives and motivations and in establishing a therapeutic situation to make these discoveries possible, translation is the all-embracing name for this whole task, which can be compared to the deciphering of a code. On Foulkes's account the conductor can make an interpretation in a number of different ways and with different purposes in mind. Location in the first case gives rise to the therapeutic use of authority and in the second to an interpretation. The location of disturbance is the process of bringing to light what is the figure and what is the ground in the current configuration. It is the conductor's task to identify where communication is blocked.
