ABSTRACT

The pre-Columbian era of Mesoamerica forms part of Guatemala’s historical roots. Today nearly half of the population is of Maya Indian descent. The long colonial period following the Spanish Conquest also had a tremendous impact on the history of Guatemala. In recent times, the brutal injustices of the colonial era have been replaced by years of political and economic instability and oppression. A small ruling elite and the military continue to dominate political and economic affairs, often aided by United States interests and foreign policy. Currently, Guatemala is plagued by political violence and violations of human rights along with severe economic and basic social problems. In such a climate social welfare is pressingly necessary but scarcely achieved.
