ABSTRACT

Developing listening proficiency is important for both learning a second language and communicating in the language. Consequently, listening has received increasing attention in second language research and pedagogy. This chapter presents the current field of Chinese second language listening research and pedagogy and compares it with that of second language listening across different languages. The research section includes a review of key concepts related to listening, the development of listening theories, listening subskills, listening strategies, factors affecting listening, and major approaches for researching Chinese listening. The pedagogy section presents the development of teaching methodology, the instruction of linguistic skills and strategies, and the use of technology in teaching listening.
