ABSTRACT

In digital frameworks, fairy tales are presented as context and texture as often as text, providing a folkloresque atmosphere that may not necessarily portray any particular narrative element in order to achieve a user’s goals. This chapter explores several examples of fairy-tale themed blogs from the social network and microblogging service Tumblr, examining the varied ways that bloggers use fairy tales in their self-expression. Case studies include fandoms of a popular fairy-tale television show, a contemporary fairy-tale blog that grew into a popular offline publication, a young adult fiction author’s blog that uses fairy tales as ambiance rather than story, and a Twitter bot that generates formulaic microtales that are engagingly familiar in their mimicry of tradition and yet also completely nonsensical.
