ABSTRACT
A defining characteristic of many fairy tales is their origin in oral custom that changes alongside the speaker. Similarly, in the online world, blogs have emerged as a forum for sharing personal stories and for connecting people with similar interests. It seems a natural pairing, then, that fairy tales and the culture surrounding the tradition of telling these stories find a home on numerous blogs. Not only are both the content and context undergoing constant change, but the layout and construction of the blog extend the reader’s experience of the stories and culture. Focusing specifically on Once Upon a Blog (2010–) and Tales of Faerie (2013), this chapter examines the fairy-tale blog’s relationship to time and personal narratives. The digital world of the blog enables fairy tales to persist into the present, giving bloggers the ability to repurpose the fairy-tale-ness of what they see around them and demonstrate that their engagement with fairy tales is inextricably linked to the perception of their own lives as fairy-tale narratives.
