ABSTRACT

Traditional and literary fairy tales supply plot contours, themes, and characters for operas (sung theatrical performances). Fairy-tale opera gets disseminated in cinema, television, radio, and home video. Thus, fairy-tale opera is simultaneously multimedia, in which one story takes many forms via a single channel; cross-media, in which a story appears via many channels; and transmedia, in which one storyworld comprises tales in many forms via many channels. The Metropolitan Opera Live in HD shows how mediated opera can be both storyteller and purveyor of quintessential multimedia productions that promote tales and opera through transformative experience and performance.
