ABSTRACT

Unhealthy food environments are known to be major drivers of obesity and diet-related non-communicable diseases (NCDs) globally (World Health Organization, 2011). Private sector organisations, including all industry stakeholders involved in producing, packaging, distributing and marketing food products and beverages (collectively referred to as ‘the food industry’), are critical in shaping the food environments of individuals

and populations (Sacks et al., 2013; World Health Organization, 2004). While the food industry has been criticised for its part in making food environments less healthy over recent decades (Brownell & Horgen, 2004; Brownell & Warner, 2009; Moodie et al., 2013; Nestle, 2002; The PLoS Medicine Editors, 2012), it is also widely acknowledged that the food industry has the collective power to be a major contributor to making food environments healthier (Gortmaker et al., 2011; United Nations, 2011; World Health Organization, 2004).
