ABSTRACT

Recently, my preschool students, the other teachers, and I discovered all the leaves on one of the walnut trees in the north orchard had turned scores of shades of brilliant yellow. One by one, we came and stood under it, and then, realizing the magic of what quickly became known as “Yellow World,” I laid on my back to get a different view. In silence, all the teachers and kids soon joined me and then began to respond to this intimate connection: “I’d like to climb it.” “It isn’t green anywhere.” “It smells like mango.” “It feels like a pillow under me.” “I can see the blue sky through its leaves.” “It’s like a storybook.” When we gathered again at the school, we captured our sense of awe and wonder through kids’ and teachers’ words, which we weaved into a poem. Emily had been taking pictures with my digital camera, and we used some of her images to construct a poster of our creation.
