ABSTRACT

This part introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters. The part focuses on the people who take part in physical activity and the places and spaces where they participate. It examines selected aspects of the stratified character of societies and discusses the ways that difference and diversity are both reinforced and challenged in policy making and practice in the physical activity sector. The part illustrates that people's physically active identities are spatialised and shaped by their everyday relations in different and diverse contexts; something that needs to be recognised in physical activity policy making, promotion and practice. It highlights that physical activity and inactivity are key policy concerns in relation to an ageing population. The part explores UK and international policy responses to the underrepresentation of girls and women in physical activity. It illustrates that both legislation and advocacy has been successful in creating opportunities for girls and women in physical activity.
