Using metaphor to influence public perceptions and policy: how metaphors can save the world

While the subtitle of this chapter is somewhat facetious, it is based on a serious idea: that metaphor may play an indispensable role in helping people and societies deal with critical challenges. Far from being merely a rhetorical or literary device, metaphor may constitute one of our species’ fundamental survival tools.
